Prof. J.G. Vaidya Merit awards for Young Woman Researchers
(for Discovery, Documentation and Applications of Higher Indian Fungi)

Professor J.G. Vaidya worked at the Department of Botany, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. He made significant and extensive contribution to the field of mycology, especially taxonomy, and biology of Aphyllophorales (medicinal fungi). Besides, he also studied pharmacognistic studies of two important medicinal mushrooms, viz., Ganoderma and Phellinus growing naturally in western Ghats, India also called as Phansomba. He investigated potential of many Folk Medicinal Fungi of India. Professor J.G. Vaidya guided than 10 Ph.D. and more than 10 M.Phill students. This award is being instituted by his students .

Criteria: Taxonomy and systematics of higher fungi are important first step of any study related to industrial application. Therefore it is important for new generation of budding researchers to undertake the fundamental research and make concerted efforts in discovering and studying higher fungi from various natural sources. These fungi must be studied for their various applications in various sectors. It is always important to establish correct identity/ validation of identity by combination of morphotaxonomy and multigene phylogeny of newly discovered as well as known India taxa of fungi. This would enable subsequent generations to continue honoring and appreciating the fundamental mycological science as well as educator-cum researcher, Prof. J.G. Vaidya.
